Don’t ask what you can do for us. Ask what we can do for you in the classroom.
Here are a few reasons for trying early music on modern instruments:
You don’t have to have
“authentic” instruments to…
Enjoy Early Music.
- In contrapuntal music such as fantasias, canzonas and motets the parts are more equal than in much later music, so each instrument has a good part.
- Much of the music is modal in character, and the harmonies are different from standard classical music. This can make it attactive to people with a folk or jazz background.
- Much early Renaissance music has a special rhythmic character that largely disappeared from later music untl the 20th century.
- We are fairly used to historic buildings, with romanesque and gothic churches all over Europe that we take for granted. A little curiosity about the music of the past would make a great deal of sense.
- You don’t necessarily have to have “authentic” instruments to enjoy this music. People often think of one kind of instrument being replaced by another, for instance viols being replaced by violins, Actually violins existed side by side with viols, but were used differently.
Almost all pieces labelled “education” are versatile and suitable for recorders, strings, wind, brass. Option: refine your educational search to:- solo // solo + continuo // solo + piano // ensemble music.
