Alexander Orologio, who was born in Italy between 1550 and 1560, seems to have spent his working life in German-speaking territory. In 1580 he was a “Trommeter und Musicus” (interesting distinction) for Emperor Rudolf in Prague. He also spent some time as a cornetto player in Dresden. Briefly – Orologio’s pieces are an attractive fusion of the sophistication of the most refined vocal music with the simple directness of German dance music.
