Ascanio Mayone’s pieces are elaborate settings of the old La Spanga melody that goes all the way back to the 15th century.
Mayone was a leading organist in Naples, he trained with Giovanni de Macque, who was known for his innovations in harmony.
These three pieces come from Mayone’s Primo libro di ricercari a tre voci / Di Ascanio Maione Napolitano, Organista, published in Naples in 1606
