These excellent 3-part fantasias by Giovanni Bassano appeared in 1585 and we have arranged these specifically for ATB recorders.
He came from a family of musicians and was a leading cornetto player in Venice. For some of his career he was actually in charge of the instrumentalists in the Basilica San Marco. As well as producing a number of motets he published two publications that are of special interest to instrumentalists: the 8 solo ricercari of 1585 (published in REP10) and the collection of decorated chansons, madrigals and motets in 1591 (shortly to be published by Edition Zefiro in its entirety).
Bassano was also one of the few musicians to publish 3-part instrumental pieces (the others being Tiburtino (IM15), Ruffo (IM1 and IM2), Willaert (IM16) and Valerio Buona (IM7). A selection of 3-part pieces from this time can be found arranged for recorders in The Renaissance Trio Book (DOL153).
In 1585 he published his Fantasie a Tre Voci which can be found in a complete edition in IM11. In the present edition we have transposed five of his pieces into the most convenient keys for recorders (ATB).
IM – Italian Music
DOL – Dolce Edition (music for recorders)
REP – Ricercate e Passaggi
