The song ‘The leaves be green’, also known as ‘Browning’, was a favourite theme for polyphonic elaboration, as in this setting by Henry Stonings. The other piece here, Hackney, is by Clement Woodcock, who composed one of the other ‘Browning’ settings (see EM1↣ ).
