The chanson rustique was a kind of French popular song that flourished particularly around 1500.
The tunes were simple and attractive, and provided good opportunities for the many great contrapuntalists active at the time to build up satisfyingly complex textures, though some settings are quite simple.
The four pieces printed here are among the earliest and they are great fun.
