Erasmus Widmann lived and worked in southern Germany all his life. But he was clearly aware of current Italian music.
The dances in this collection are quite distinctive and charming.
Those in this little volume are taken from his Musicalscher Tugendtsiegel, which was published in 1613 in Nürnberg. The entire collection contains 20 five-part texted dances (they can either be sung or played) as well as the 20 4-part pieces without text printed here, all of which carry girl’s names of the time.
