The German Hoftanz is a fascinating but rather shadowy genre, in which some of the rhythmic complexity of the 15th century appears, framing a steady tune in the tenor. Benzenhauer was definitely the most popular one at the time. And it should be part of the repertoire of any self respecting consort of viols.
