Ludwig Senfl was by far the greatest German composer of his time. He was greatly influenced by Josquin des Prés, and had that master’s gift for effortless counterpoint. His songs are by far the most ingenious and fascinating of the German repertoire; his speciality was having the tunes in canon, surrounded by rhythmically inventive counterpoint.
