This suite of Gavottes (surely the earliest use of this dance, term) comes from Praetorius’ massive Terpsichore, a collection of (mostly) French dance, tunes in polished settings. A couple of these gavottes are very familiar today, mostly from recordings, but they make more sense as a suit.
