Richardo Rogniono’s diminution treatise of 1591 is a huge leap forward from the Dalla Casa book of 1584. Rogniono jumps more frequently from part to part, even in his simpler (facile) versions.
This volume contains al the music for viola bastarda in the second part of Richardo Rogniono’s Passaggi per potersi essercitare of 1592. The two models chosen by Rogniono are works originally composed in the 1540s that figure prominently in the diminution repertoire: volume 1 of the present series (REP11 ↣) contains no less than nine different versions – including two by Rogniono – of Rore’s Ancor che col partire, and there is an earlier viola bastarda setting by Dalla Casa in (REP4 ↣). Rogniono also provided a decorated top part for Ung gay bergier (printed together with arrangements by Dalla Casa and Bassano in our (REP3 ↣), which contains the original chanson and gives a list of other settings of it. and again there is a viola bastarda arrangement by Dalla Casa (REP4 ↣).
