Terpsichore<\/em> were originally composed by various French violinists and dancing-masters, and that most of them were supplied by Anthoine Emerald, a dancing-master working in Brunswick. Several of the pieces have the name of a musician in their title, such as Wustrow or de la Moth.<\/p>\nIn most cases Praetorius had only the melody to go on, and simply added the remaining parts, but there is a small group of pieces labelled ‘incerti’ in the original, where Praetorius was also provided with a bass part, so only had to fill in the inner parts, a considerably easier task. However, there is also an important group of about 70 dances attributed to Francisque Caroubel, another French violinist who happened to visit Wolfenb\u00fcttel in 1610; here it seems that Caroubel was responsible for all the parts, though again in many cases the tunes would probably have been composed by other musicians.<\/p>\n
Not all the tunes in Terpsichore<\/em> are French in origin. There are settings of English ballad tunes such as Wolsey’s Wilde<\/em>, Light of Love<\/em>, Packington’s Pound<\/em> and the tune set by Dowland as Mistresse Winter’s Jump<\/em>. Other English pieces include the Bataille Coranto<\/em> of John Bull, and there is a setting of the Dutch song, Willem van Nassau<\/em>. The English dance tunes may have come to Praetorius’ attention via some of the English violinists working in North Germany at the time (e.g. William Brade and Thomas Simpson), but not necessarily so. Dance music has a habit of travelling long distances, and this was almost as true in the Renaissance as it is today. So we should not be surprised to find a courante apparently based on Vecchis’s So ben mi ch’ ha bon tempo<\/em>. And there is a group of classic Spanish dances of the kind that ended up as standard Italian repertoire, the Spagnoletta<\/em>, Pavaniglia (Pavane de Spaigne)<\/em> and the Canarios<\/em>. A good example of a dance that was widely known in Europe is the Branle de la Torche<\/em>, which has survived in settings by D’Estr\u00e9es and Zanetti, and a keyboard arrangement by Antonio Valente, and for which Arbeau gives a choreography.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Catalogue no. #DM15<\/p>\n

A Note about this Volume 5<\/h5>\n
This volume contains longer 4-part dances than those found in volumes 1 and 3. But the special feature of some of the music here is the inclusion of quite elaborate divisions. The most impressive of these are in the pieces called “Reprinses” which end Terpsichore<\/em> ; of these Praetorius says the following: “Folgen vier Reprinse, zum Beschlu\u00df der Galliarden, Wie dieselbe vonden Frantz\u00f6sischen Dantzmeistern diminuiret und coloriret werden<\/span>” (Here follow four reprises, to conclude the galliards, as divided and decorated by the French dance masters). However, elsewhere in Terpsichore<\/em> there are dances, usually courantes, with decorated repeats, and we have included most of these in the present volume. These decorations are by no means confined to the top part: often both cantus and tenor move together in divisions; even when only the cantus is decorated, this normally involves major rearranging of the inner parts, and sometimes the bass as well; there are also a few rather impressive divisions in the bass part itself. Although it is quite possible that top parts similar to these would have been improvised, the radical rearrangement of the inner parts is not something that could have been done so easily on the spur of the moment.<\/p>\nWhere marked with \u00f8 Praetorius was supplied with the top and bottom parts (melody & bass line in modern parlance) so only had to supply the inner parts.<\/p>\n
