Peter Phillips was one of that group of English musicians exiled because of religious persecution (he was a Catholic). As a result, his music is very interesting in its mix of influences. The Pavan and Galliard ‘Dolorosa’, which exists in an elaborate keyboard setting in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, is one of his finest pieces, containing a remarkable chromatic passage.
