Come On In
Giovanni Battista Grillo (c. 1570-1622) is thought to have studied with Giovanni Gabrieli. After a period in Graz he returned to Venice in 1612 to work as an organist at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco; eventually in 1619 he was hired as first organist at St. Mark’s, a position that had been held earlier by Gabrieli himself. Only a relatively small number or instrumental pieces by Grillo have survived, but they show the signs of a lively mind.
