Viadana’s Sinfonie a otto voci of 1610 contains 18 pieces named after different Italian cities.
This sinfonia, like La Bolognese comes from Viadana’s Sinfonie Musicale a otto voci, published in Venice in 1610. Each of the pieces in his collection is named after a different Italian city. In some cases the music relates directly in some way to the town in question: La Fiorentina is based on the popular Ballo del Gran Duca, also known as the “Aria di Fiorenza”, La Bergamasca uses the popular tune of that name, obviously named after Bergamo, and La Mantovana is based on a balletto by Gastoldi, a composer closely associated with Mantua. In the present case the connection with the city of Piacenza is not entirely clear (we would welcome any theories).
