All of Viadana’s 8-part Sinfonie are named after Italian cities. Often there is a specific connection to the city in question in the music: La Mantovana is based on a piece by Gastoldi, a leading musician in Mantova, and La Fiorentina is based on the Aria di Fiorentia (Ballo del Gran Duca).
It seems rather likely that the present piece is a conscious attempt to imitate the music of Orazio Vecchi, who was the most important musician from Modena: Viadana’s piece has a certain playfulness which is rather similar to Vecchi.
