Viadana’s Sinfonie a otto voci of 1610 contains 18 pieces named after different Italian cities.
The connection with the city of Naples is not entirely clear (we would welcome any theories), though the slightly eccentric chromaticism may allude to the music of such Neapolitan composers as Giovanni Maria Trabaci, and the opening theme, with its fast chord changes, could be based on a villanella alla napolitana.
